(PENNSYLVANIA.) 2 pieces of illustrated music on the 1844 Philadelphia nativist riots. Each 3 pages on 2 detached sheets, 13 x 9 1/2 inches; foxing, inked page numbers in upper corner. Philadelphia, 1844

  • Notes: These two pieces were written to commemorate the nativist anti-Irish and anti-Catholic riots which killed at least 20 in Philadelphia in May 1844.
James W. Porter. "See Our Torn Flag Still Waving: A New National Song." Illustrated with a tattered flag, "the glorious flag under which the AMERICANS assembled in Kensington on the memorable 3rd. 6th. & 7th. May 1844." The lyrics urge patriots to "Rise against the invading band . . . to defend your Native Land." This piece was submitted to the Library of Congress for copyright on 22 May, just 15 days after the riots ended--likely made possible by Porter''s roles as composer, publisher and engraver. One copy in OCLC, at the Library of Congress.
William Geib. "Native American Grand March, Composed in Honor of the Native American Association for the Fourth of July 1844." Illustrated with an American flag. 2 copies in OCLC (Library of Congress and Free Library of Philadelphia).
