John L. Churchill.

The Resources of Kittanning Town and Suburbs, Her Business and Business Men.

[Kittanning, PA?]: [W.H. Williams?], circa late 1850s
Letterpress broadside, 19½ x 13½ inches; minor foxing, minor wear at intersection of folds, short tape repairs on verso.

  • Notes: A sort of rhyming business directory in 108 verses, describing a small town 36 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Everyone from the sheriff to the coroner to the barber gets his four lines. We bet this describes the printer of this broadside: "W.H. Williams, printer here / His business round he will revere / He printed his papers clean and neat / His custom shows his work complete." The broadside is undated, but David C. Boggs was the town's elected recorder from 1857 to 1864. That fits the description of J.B. Findley as the bank cashier, a job he held at the time of the 1860 census. We find no hint of the Civil War here. The author may have been John Lamberson Churchill (1800-1879), a shoemaker who lived in Freeport not far south of Kittanning in 1860. None traced in OCLC or at auction.
