  • Notes: A detailed statistical analysis of Philadelphia's charitable institutions. The 1805 "enumeration of diseases" at the Alms-House shows 110 with venereal diseases, 57 with "madness," 16 with "King's evil," 10 with leprosy, and many other ailments. The profits of the "Manufactory of the House of Employment" are detailed. The expense lists for the Alms-House include a list of all food purchased: 3½ barrels of shad, 11½ barrels beer, 395¼ bushels of turnips, 550 pounds of chocolate, and more.
