(PERU.) Hurtado de Mendoza y Manrique, García. Response to a petition regarding the distribution of Indian laborers. 16 manuscript pages, 12 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches, on 4 folding sheets, unbound; stitch holes on inner margins, moderate worming with numerous modern repairs; uncut. With a related 2-page manuscript transmittal letter signed by Antonio de Ore, similar size and comdition but trimmed. "Ciu''d de los Reyes" [Lima], 20 May 1590

  • Notes: García Hurtado de Mendoza, Marquis of Cañete (1535-1609) had recently arrived from Spain as the new Viceroy of Peru; he has previously served as Viceroy of Chile. Here he responds to petitions by Jerónimo de Ore, who wanted a larger share of Indian laborers in the Guamanga district, apparently for gold mining. He grants de Oro authority to use Indians from Canaria, Huaya, Cayara, Colca, and Huancapi (all in what is now Víctor Fajardo Province), sets forth the labor regulations, notes that the de Ore family had lost much of their fortune fighting Indians, and that his father Antonio de Ore had established a monastery in the area. The transmittal letter signed by Antonio de Ore (Geromino''s brother or son) is undated but apparently from the viceroyalty of Luis de Velasco which ran from 1596 to 1604. Partial typescripts of both documents are available.
