(PERU.) Legal documents concerning Pedro Abadia's flying bridge.

(PERU.) Legal documents concerning Pedro Abadia's flying bridge. 2 folding watercolor diagrams, both torn. 45, 87, [8] manuscript leaves. Folio, original vellum; dozens of separate documents bound together, edge wear, some leaves detached. Lima, 1799-1833 (bulk 1799-1811)

  • Notes: This manuscript volume bears the title "Titulo de Propiedad de las Tierras y Puente de Santa perteneciente al Sr Dn Pedro Abadia 1799." Abadia was a prominent citizen of Lima. In 1843, an American consul named Richard Cleveland wrote: "No stranger of respectability ever visited Lima, without enjoying the hospitality of Don Pedro Abadia. He was eminently hospitable, urbane, and friendly" with "an influence with the Viceroy and the Cabildo, unsurpassed by any other individual in the kingdom." Much of this volume relates to an unusual bridge spanning the Río Santa which was operated jointly by Abadia and Jose Coquette. This "puerte volante," or flying bridge, was essentially a boat attached downstream from an anchor which could be moved from shore to shore by the use of a rudder. The two illustrations in this volume show the specifics of this device.
