PETER BRADLEY (1940 - )
Ramsey.

Acrylic on cotton canvas, 1973. 2260x1085 mm; 89x42 3/4 inches. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "water base acrylic emulsion" in red crayon, verso.

Provenance: André Emmerich Gallery, New York, with the gallery label and ink stamp on the stretcher bar verso; private collection, Massachusetts.

This monumental canvas is from Peter Bradley's important early 1970s period of experimental color field painting. Combining rich layers of color with broad gestural moments, Bradley expanded the expressiveness found in acrylic painting in the early 1970s. Another painting of Bradley's Clay Creek was included in the 1973 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Peter Bradley had six solo exhibitions at the prestigious André Emmerich Gallery in New York in the 1970s, beginning in 1971.

That same year, while working as the associate director of the Perls Gallery in New York, Bradley organized the De Luxe Show of abstract art in Houston, Texas. Sponsored by Houston art patrons John and Dominique de Menil, the show brought together a diverse and important group of contemporary abstract artists, including Ed Clark, Sam Gilliam, Richard Hunt, Al Loving, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski and Larry Poons. This hugely influential exhibition is described in detail by curator and art historian Darby English in his recent book, 1971: A Year in the Life of Color.
