(PHILADELPHIA PHOTO SCHOOL)
Pair of albums with more than 400 photographs associated with assignments at the Severo Antonelli School of Photography, which was founded by the Italian-American futurist photographer Severo Antonelli.
The two albums were shot, printed, and compiled by Wm. Yoder, a skilled photographer and accomplished student. Chock-a-block with pictures demonstrating many different technical assignments, including the use of a Speed Graphic; drills teaching density and contrast, capturing action, and depth of field; re-photographing artwork; the technique and art of retouching prints; experimenting with different film stocks; choosing the proper filter; photographing industrial products; and more. Pages include class assignments and Yoder's original felt tip pen-and-ink illustrations. Silver prints, the images measuring 4 1/2x3 1/2 inches (11.4x8.9 cm.), most prints with a small hole punch through one corner; with mimeographed assignment sheets and calligraphic titles. Large folios, red leatherette; some leaves detached; ties and twin-bolt binding. 1950s.

AND--An illustrated exhibition catalog of Antonelli's photographs, which was published in conjunction with a retrospective at the Woodmere Art Museum, in Philadelphia. Folio, stiff wrappers. Nd.

  • Notes: Antonellli (1907-1995) founded the school in the late 1930s and, in concert with his accomplished photographs, provided renowned professional instruction in photography. The institution operated for nine decades.
