  • Literature:
    R. Bowman, Philip Pearlstein: The Complete Paintings, Alpine Fine Arts Collection, Ltd., New York, 1983, page 315, number 231 (illustrated).

Moving away from Abstract Expressionism in 1961, Pearlstein began to devote himself to painting the figure as accurately as possible, and eventually painted directly from models. By the time was completed, Pearlstein had almost fully developed the style for which he is most well known: unconventional poses, close viewpoints and cropping, extensive shadow work, and controlled palette and brushwork. During the mid-1960s, Pearlstein's compositions grew more complex as he began to focus not only on the models, but on the furniture and props in his small studio. Nude Seated on Chair is a prime example of this period, with complex shadows and the close attention paid to the turning of the chair legs. The limited color palette of the painting reflects Pearlstein's interest in sepia figure drawings which he had made since the late 1950s.
