  • Notes: Descriptions by Philostratus the Elder of 65 pictures in a possibly imaginary Neapolitan collection, the most extensive early text on painting in classical antiquity, together with similar writings by Philostratus the Younger and Callistratus. The Greek original versions date from the 3rd century A.D.; Vigenère's translation was first published in 1578. Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration 23 and Praz, page 453 cite 1614 and 1615 editions; Sandys I, 336.
