Silver print, 5.5 x 3.75in, onthe original mount, with Nichols Studio,Tyler,Texas on mount recto. 1909 E1,000/1,500 A photostatic copy of the front page of "The Tyler Daily Courier and Times" accompapnies the lot and reads: "NEGRO PAYS PENALTY FOR HELLISH CRIME. Jim Hodge hung at high Noon from derrick on construction work of court house - witnessed by thousands of people. No confession made by Negro;A quiet but determined lot.Young lady slow to identify...Men do the work quickly." An account of the execution noted that "The Tyler mob utilized the hoisting equipment at the construction site on May 1, 1909.This was done during lunch hour when workmen were away."
