[ Photographs ] (Artist's Studies) Group of 38 "etudes artistiques" collected by the Long Island painter Charles Henry Miller that were apparently used as studies for his landscape paintings, comprising Barbizon School-like nature studies, among them 3 by James Valentine, one by Constant Famin, 3 by F. Albert Schwartz, and one by Hessling, of trees, snow scenes, Alpine valleys, worn chalets, farmyards and farm children, overgrown riverbanks, and an enigmatic portrait, by Famin, of 2 men seated on horses drinking from a pond. Albumen and one platinum print, all but 2 are unmounted, various sizes, 4.5 x 7 to 8 x 10.5 inches; the Schwartz studies with the photographer's blindstamp, the valentine's initialled, titled and numbered in the negative, the Hessling with a handstamp on verso, and the Famin with a blindstamp; many numbered in a period hand, in pencil, on verso. Late 1850s-80s E1500-2000 From The Collection Of Charles Henry Miller 1842-1922, A Land- Scape Artist Whose Works Are In The Metropolitan Museum Of Art and Boston Museum Of Fine Arts. Constant Famin's work is held at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Albert Schwartz, also represented in this group, was a Berlin tographer who specialized in small-format and "often exquisite" studies for artists.
