[ Photographs ] ( Aviation) Group of 16 photographs documenting the Navy's early attempts to develop the aircraft carrier and Hydroplane showing E. B. Ely and his Curtis biplane taking off and landing on the U. S. S. Pennsylvania, in San Francisco harbor, on January 18, 191 1, together with two photographs showing experiments with man-carrying kites. Silver prints, 4/4x 6.5inches, most captioned in the negative and 4 signed in the negative "E. Oswald. Photo." 1911 E1400-1800 Eugene B. Ely was a barnstormer, hired by Curtis, who, became the first person to land an airplane on a ship, two months after he had become the first person to successfully take off from a ship.
