Buffalo Bill's revue opened for the summer of 1886 at the new outdoor amphitheater at Erastina Park, Staten Island, and stayed in a tent city that they erected near by. A major event, even by New York standards, it attracted many luminaries, among them: General W T Sherman, who was present on opening day; Mark Twain, who saw it two days in a row; and P T Barnum, who praised it as the only show, aside from his own, he had bothered to see in forty years. Seventeen ferries brought the crowds from New York for two per formances a day with a total 360,000 spectators for the entire run. The following spring the troupe set sail for England and a triumphant tour of Europe.
