[ Photographs ] (Cased Images) Irving, James Extensive archive of the work and life of James E. Irving, the earliest daguerreotypist in Troy, New York, comprising 8 daguerreotypes featuring 2 half-plates, the first of Irving and his wife, a fine quarter- plate self-portrait 4 sixth-plates including a beautiful image of his wife, Susan Clarkson Irving with their daughter, and an image of Irving and Susan also 2 quarter -plate and 5 sixth-plate ambrotypes of children; and an oval tintype of the tographer: 3in leather cases, one separated at the hinge, one in a half Union case, 8in their mat and preserver, 3 without cases; also with 41 cabinet cards of men women and children, and 3 of Irving and his family, 2 Promenade cards, 2 elephant Imperial cards, 3 stereo views, and one carte-de-visite, all by Irving. Albumen prints, and one cyanotype, the majority with Irving's printed credit on mount recto or verso. 1845-1865 E4000-5000 With - An album compiled by a descendent of Irving's containing twelve cyanotypes and approximately ninety modern copy prints of the photographer and his family, that includes Irving's photographs of houses, train stations, railroads, Civil War veterans reunions, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and more. Silver prints and cyanotypes, mounted one to four per page, most titled, in white ink, on mount recto. 1845-1865; printed 1930s? James Irving, born in York, England in 1818, moved to the United States in 1842 and soon after learned daguerrotypy with Charles Meade. he established himself as an itinerant photographer, traveled as far west as Chicago, and returned to the east, establishing himself in Troy, New York. he was the city's first daguerreotypist, and remained an active photographer and teacher there (counting among his pupils, George Rockwood) until his death in 1901 Includes-Rockwood, George. Portrait of James Irving. Platinum print, 5 75 x 4 inches, on the original mount, with the photographer's blindstamp; framed. And - Photostatic copies of a broadside for "Irving's New Daguerreotye [sic] Rooms" in Troy; mentions of Irving in Humphrey's Journal, 1851; his obituary from "The Daily Times, Troy"; a letter written from Irving to his wife, dated May 15, 1845, and a typed transcript of the same; and transcripts of three additional letters written by descendants of Irving.
