The Madewood Plantation House is the first major building designed by the noted Irish-American architect Henry Howard. Construction of this Greek Revival mansion was begun in 1846 by Col. Thomas Pugh, a sugar cane planter Still standing, it is located on Bayou Lafourche midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In 1983 the Department of the Interior designated Madewood a National Historic Landmark.
