Early-mid 1850s E4000-6000 A mysterious image insofar as the shades might have been designed to shield the wearer's eyes or, perhaps, to conceal an occular deformity. In addition, the pen the gentleman holds could be a conceit of the photographer, or proof that the subject was truly able to write. Much of the pattern of spotting which appears over the image is not on the daguerreotype plate itself, but the glass which covers it.
