Half-plate daguerreotype portrait of 2 sisters, one an initiate (?) and the other wearing a more ornate costume, with her hair coiffed in ringlets, and resting her hands on a book in her lap; with Simons's Philadelphia imprint stamped in the mat; in a half leather case. Middle-late 1840s E1500-2000 A curious image which at first glance appears to be a simple portrait of two sisters. Upon closer inspection, however, one sees that one sister is dressed and coiffed severely, with no ornamentation other than a cross around her neck, while the other sibling wears fashionable, if understated, clothing and jewelry, and bears a demure smile.
