[ Photographs ] ( Civil War) Cartes-de-visite Group of 12 cartes-de-visite of Civil War scenes in the south, particularly Baton Rouge, including runaway slave kids (which is incorrectly captioned on mount verso, "Our scouts and guides in 1863 Baton Rouge"), the U S. S. Mississippi, a scene of hundreds of Union soldiers aboard a naval vessel, the iron clad "Essex," a bird's-eye view of a cavalry convoy and a portrait of Union scouts by A. D. Lyde, the post office and Brevert Marshall's office at Baton Rouge; and 4 portraits of 2 different military figures, 3 are of an unidentified general by Brady; several with handwritten captions on mount verso. 1863 E2500-3500 In another catalog we have seen the illustrated image of slave children identified as " contraband that marched 60 miles to get to our lines." Abolitionist officers, such as Benjamin Butler, gave slaves refuge. The photograph has been attributed to the same photographer responsible for thefamous study of the scarred back of Pvt. Gordon.
