[ Photographs ] (Civil War) Cartes-de-Visite Group of 35 cartes-de-visite belonging to Captain Alexander Kelsey Thorp, lst N.Y Dragoons, comprising 32 images of Civil War figures featuring a portrait Of Lincoln by Fredericks and another of the president and his son Tad, a portrait of McLellan, reproductions Of Jefferson Davis and Vice President Stephens, an image of a Confederate major and surgeon, inscribed "an out Law and Rebel (don't he look so)," 9 members of the N.Y Dragoons, 11 reproductions of such notables as Stonewall Jackson, Sherman, Jeb Stuart and Meade; also 3 humorous reproductions, one with an inscription ending "All Quiet on the Potomac." Albumen prints, 17 with period inscriptions and/or captions in pencil/or ink on mounts recto and/or verso; 14 with the photographer's imprint on mount verso; 6 with penciled, captions in a later unidentified hand on mount recto or verso. 1862-64 E1200-1800 With - Archive of materials sent by Thorp to his family during his Civil War duty or found with him when he was killed by a sniper at the battle of Winchester, Virginia, September 1864 Included are Thorp's cap box with four bullets; an ambrotype ( found by Thorp on a southern battlefield) of the daughters of a Confederate general; a leather pouch, and his wallet, The wallet contains a carte-de-visite of a young soldier (possibly Thorp), and a number of documents from 1864, including two receipts for money sent by the captain to his wife: medical release papers, a penciled, note detailing who money could be collected from should Thorp be killed; a letter written to his "fe enclosing $150 and instructing her to "keep mum about the $ I sent to you as it is yours if I don't come home... " and, finally, a penciled, note documenting the expenses of telegraphing Thorps wife, having his coffin constructed, embalming and expressing him to his family. 1864
