While there appears to be no single photographer for this group of images (which probably were made for record-keeping purposes, rather than public sale), some of them may have been made by the photographer H. Goldsticker. This little- known figure, who worked under Col. William Merrill, photographed in the Chattanooga area, and several of his photographs appear in the George Eastman House's "The Chattanooga Album." Another possible author of some of the images in this group is the famous George N Barnard. Mile the size and visual characteristics of the views do not resemble Barnard's work, one of the panoramas ( "Knoxville from the cupola of the University of East Tennessee..") is a reduced copy print of a Barnard print. In addition, there is a relationship to Barnard in the Portrait of Generals Poe and Babcock. Captain 0 M. Poe was Barnards supervisor when he was official photographer of the Military Division of the Mississippi in 1863, and the two were friends after the War. With - Group of three photographs of Brigadier General Albert Ordway (1843-91), the former owner of this collection, and five other military portraits. Ordway, a native Of Boston, began the Civil war as a first lieutenant in the 24th Massachusetts, then served under General Burnside in North Carolina, and later Joined the Army of the Potomac with which he fought at the Battle of Gettysburg.
