[ Photographs ] (Civil War) Tintypes Full-plate tintype of Private William Noll, of the famous "Fire Zouaves," Company D of the 11th New York Volunteers, posed in his red-shirted and trimmed uniform. Heavily overpainted tintype, 8.5 x 6.5 inches. 1861 E1800-2200 Private Noll (spelled Knoll in some records) was a New York butcher who enlisted with the "Fire Zouaves" in 1861 when he was twenty years old. his military career proved to be brief and not outstanding, distinguished only by the fact that he served in the same company as the famous Ellsworth. Noll participated in the first major battle of the war, the great confrontation at Bull Run, a defeat for the 11th New York and the Union Army as a whole. Noll himself was wounded and taken prisoner and, upon his release a year later, was declared unfit for duty. Noll returned to New York where, unable to return to his trade as a butcher, he lived off his disability pension (a healthy one and raised a family of eleven children. he died in 1918 on the 53rd anniversary of the Lee's surrender This tintype of Noll appears as the cover image and on p. 34 of the September-October 1998 issue of the magazine "Military Images. " Accompanied By-Original discharge certificate issued to Noll in March, 1862 and photocopies of various documents and letters pertaining to his wounding at the Battle of Bull Run, his discharge, subsequent pension, increase ofpension and end ofpension payments. 1862-1918
