[ Photographs ] (Class Album) Harvard College, 1861 Album entitled "The Class of 1861, Harvard College," containing 179 photographs, comprising 110 vignetted portraits of faculty and students, including Charles Eliot, A. P. Peabody, Louis Agassiz, Benjamin Pierce, Wendell Phillips Garrison, Olivier Wendell Holmes, Jr., (as well as 44 laid-in later portraits of students at the 1891 (?) class reunion), 25 scenic views of the campus, plus a fine study of the African-American porter and the row team working out on the Charles; nearly all of the portraits are signed.The original portraits are oval salt prints, 6 x 5inches (each with interleaving tissue) and the later ones are printing-out paper prints, 5.5 x 3.75 inches,: the views are oval and round cornered albumen prints, 6 x 8inches, and captioned on mount recto. Thick folio, gilt-stamped morocco, front cover detached, backstrip defective; contents clean; all edges gilt. 1861 E2000-3000 A comprehensive pictorial survey of Harvard College at the outset of the Civil War, from the collection of Wm. Henry Pettee (whose name appears in gilt letters on the front cover), an alumnus who was later a professor at the University of Michigan.
