[ Photographs ] Cob Langdon Saltram's seat.Vintage platinum print, 11 x 7inches, with the photographer's signature, in pencil, and notations, in an unidentified hand, on verso. 1907-10 E8000-12000 The young photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn was a great admirer of Henry James work and subsequently became a close friend. The two met, in 1905, when Coburn photographed James for "Century Magazine. " his portrait so pleased the writer that he suggested that Coburn "make photographs to be used in all the other volumes of his forthcoming collection. " Coburn himself referred to this grand project as his " collaboration with the great author james's boyish qualities, which Coburn characterized as " unquenchable and contagious enthusiasm over these illustrations," made working together as fellow artists thoroughly enjoyable. Coburn further noted, "The reason why James decided on photographic illustrations for his novels and tales was because, as he put it, photographs were 'in as different a medium' as possible."' This picture was later reproduced as a photographic illustration in The Collected Works Of Henry James (London, 1910). For a discussion of Coburn's andjames's friendship and collaboration, see the chapter entitled "Illustrating Henry James," in A. L.
