[ Photographs ] (Crime) Pair of highly disturbing photographs of the hanging of an African-American man in Columbus, Mississippi, the first showing him standing on the platform with a noose around his neck, the second showing the grim aftermath of the event. Silver prints, 9.5 x 7.5inches, the first with the word "colored" written in ink on recto and both with an explanatory caption, written in the same hand, in ink, on verso. 1940s E1500-2000 Both captions were clearly written by an onlooker at the event. The chillingly indifferent inscription that accompanies the first image reads, in part, "I walked up the 13 steps day they finished building the platform... Harold and I watched the hanging of colored man here in Columbus, Miss.
