[ Photographs ] (Egypt/ The Sphinx) Group of 18 photographs documenting the step-by- step excavation of the Sphinx during the 19th-century and including 6 views, one by Hammerschmidt and another by Zangaki, of the Sphinx with only its head appearing through the sand; 3 other views, one by Frith, of the monument with its shoulders partially uncovered; another 6, two by Lekegian and one by Hammerschmidt, of the Sphinx with its back, but not forepaws excavated 3 showing the monument with one paw and a segment of the other uncovered, and, last, a view of the Sphinx with head, chest, paws and toes revealed.
