[ Photographs ] (Egypt/ The Sphinx) Group of 18 photographs documenting the step-by- step excavation of the Sphinx during the 19th-century and including 6 views, one by Hammerschmidt and another by Zangaki, of the Sphinx with only its head appearing through the sand; 3 other views, one by Frith, of the monument with its shoulders partially uncovered; another 6, two by Lekegian and one by Hammerschmidt, of the Sphinx with its back, but not forepaws excavated 3 showing the monument with one paw and a segment of the other uncovered, and, last, a view of the Sphinx with head, chest, paws and toes revealed. Albumen prints, various sizes from 14 x 10.5 to 3.5 x 4 75 inches, several unmounted, the remainder on their original mounts, 10 titled, credited and/or numbered and dated in the negative, 8 with handwritten period captions, in ink, written on mount recto, the Frith with the photographer's credit, the date and title printed on mount recto. 1857-1889 E1800-2200 And - Group of three stereographs of the Sphinx, by Keystone View Company, American Stereoscopic Company and Underwood & Underwood.
