[ Photographs ] ( Freaks) Eisenmann: Brady/Anthony; et alia Binder containing more than 65 extraordinary photographs of circus freaks associated with Barnum's Museum, Ringling Brothers, and various sideshows, comprising 21 cabinet cards and 46 carte-de-visite-size images, with 10 by Eisenmann, several by Brady/Anthony, and half a stereo view of Barnum's Great Roman Hippodrome. Accompanying the pictures is extensive typewritten information about virtually all of the important personages associated with the circus. Albumen, printing out paper, and silver prints, the cabinet card prints, 5.5 x 4inches and smaller; many on the original mounts with the photographer's credit; a few are hand-colored. 1860s-1910s E7000-10000 A remarkable compilation of original photographs of largely 19th-century " outsiders" that was clearly intended for publication. Each sleeve is artfully arranged to highlight variant portraits of notable figures with manuscript information about "the sideshow - the peerless prodigies ofphysical phenomena and great presentation of marvelous living human curiosities. " The group also contains rare photographs of lesser-known personalities who were also popular in the 19th-century and a contemporary 2-page montage of circus posters. Background details are provided about the genesis of the circus, many of its well-known performers, as well as the impresario P T Barnum. The binder features multiple portraits of the following entertainers: Siamese twins such as Chang and Eng, Millie and Christine, the Bearded Lady, "Miss Annie Jones," Admiral Dot, Tom Thumb, Chas. Decker, Lavinia Warren, and Commodore Nutt. Other personalities represented include: Piramel and Sami, George Williams; Circassian women; Charles B. Trip; Beatrix-Queen of Snake Charmers, the Wild Men of Borneo; giants, such as Miss Anna Swan, a seven footer from Nova Scotia, Captain S. A. Shields and wife James Murphy; Fat men and ladies, such as John Hanson Craig, Madame Sherwood, Eddie Celon, Mary Bauyan, Ada Briggs, Chauncey Morlan, Big Alice; tiny people, such as Senorita Luciz Zarate, Nellie Keeler, John and Maria Mertz, Dudley Foster, a cabinet card of a mother and baby elephant, and others. Finally, there are silverprints of denizens of Midget Village, unidentified Siamese twins, Diavol loopin the loop, and a man with a gigantic penis that actually hangs past his knees.
