Circa 1930 E2000-2500 Rosalie Hook Gwathmey (1908 ) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Gwathmey began photographing, in 1938, and subsequently joined the Photo League, where she studied with Paul Strand and Sid Grossman. In 1946 she summarized her work: "I am particularly interested in photographing the Negro in my native South because of the problems that face him-housing, jobs, discrimination. These things I would like to see bettered.
