[ Photographs ] Keith, John Frank Group of 6 photographs of working class families in Philadelphia's Kensington area. Peal photo postcard silver prints, approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches one with Keith's handstamp on verso. 1920s E1500-2000 John Frank Keith 1883-1947 was an amateur photographer who earned his living as a book- keeper. his weekends, however, were spent taking photographs of the working class denizens of the Kensington area, and in his small-format works, reminiscent of the documentary images of Hine and Sander, Keith captured the details of this community. While the subjects of his photographs are all posed in virtually the same setting, on the stoop of their home, the subtleties of their portraits from dresses and shoes to architectural surroundings individualized and personalized each image. Keith's work is in the collections of the Library Company of Philadelphia and the National Museum Of American Art, and was featured in the exhibition "American Photographs, The First Century" and its accompanying book (see p. 137).
