[ Photographs ] (NATIVE-AMERICANS) SALT PRINTS Pawnee Chief, Scalla-la-nar-sharo, or "only chief." * Pawnee warrior, Qu-u-aek, or "BuffaloBull." Salted paper prints from calotype negatives, each 5.5 x 3 .5in both tipped to the original 7x10-inch mount, with copious notations by C. M., a reporter associated with "The Illustrated London News." 1858 E9,000/12,000 A rare set of photographs that are directly linked to the early history of the picture press and photojournalism. "Only Chief" and "Buffalo Bull" were representatives of the Pawnees who, along with the Poncas and Pottowattamies, were presented to PresidentFranklin Pierce at the White House on Jan. 14, 1858. C. M., a British reporter, dispatched these photographs to London (along with his written report), where they were reproduced as steel engravings in "The Illustrated London News'," Feb. 13, 1858 issue, under the headline "Transatlantic Sketches - Interview of Indians with the `Great Father'." Although the photographer is unidentified, it is interesting to note that both Mathew Brady and Jesse Whitehurst are possible makers of the images given their access to activities at the White House, and status in what may loosely be construed as the presscorps. The journalist's lengthy article about the great ceremonial interview between Pres. Pierce and delegations from three tribes of Indians, including the Poncas and Pawnees, who were ancient and hereditary foes, is in and of itself a photographic, that is, minute-by-minute, description of what transpired at this colorful, and tense, meeting. His text unabashedly evokes the strong hostility with whichEuropeans viewed native peoples: "On one side was Civilisation, represented by the venerable and urbane President . . . On the other side was Barbarism, represented by the tribes in their wild and striking costumes." C. M.'s article features prominent reproductions of each of the photographs offered in this lot, along with a view of the entire delegation being introduced to Pres. Pierce, and a full- page illustration of the President "inducing the hostile tribes of the Pawnees and Poncas to shake hands."The original two-page article, which was removed from "The Illustrated London News," accompanies theoriginal photographs..
