[ Photographs ] (Panoramas) New York City Five-part panorama taken from the Brooklyn tower of the Brooklyn Bridge entitled "Beal's Photographic View of New York in 1876" showing the span of Manhattan Island, its 37 piers, naval vessels, public buildings and, in the center of the view, the Manhattan tower of the bridge, as of yet unconnected to its mate. Albumen prints, each approximately 15.5 x 17 inches, overall size 15.5 x 88.25 inches, with the photographer's credit, the title, names of landmarks and piers, and the date printed on mount recto; linen-backed. 1876 E3000-4000 A wonderful view of New York City, by J H. Beal of Beekman Street, which captures the expansion of the metropolis, yet, sadly, also reveals how many of its landmarks are no longer extant. Along with such public edifices as Grand Central, the Fulton Fish Market, and the New York Life Insurance building, the panorama points out the Newsboys and Womens' homes, the Corn Exchange, the Passionist Fathers Monastery, an array of ferries, steamers and masted ships, and Piers one to 39 (two piers were demolished for the tower of the Brooklyn Bridge).
