Albumen prints, 9 are 10 x 13.5inches and one is 8 x 11inches, a few with hand written caption information, in pencil, on verso; duplicate. 1890s E3000-4000 A rare group ofphotographs from the Semeonoff- Tyanshanski Collection of the site Of the world's oldest civilized region, which was annexed by the Russia in the 1860s. The city of Samarkand was founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century B. C. It is located in an oasis between the Syr Darya and Amu Darys Rivers in the middle of the Silk Route from China to Istanbul. The archeological sites recorded in the photographs span from the 5th century B. C. to the 18th century; only one is an interior view (of the palazzo in Bukhara). Although the pictures focus on native architecture, many also include human figures
