[ Photographs ] (Werstern U. S.) Watson, "Cattle Kate" Ninth-plate tintype of Ella "Cattle Kate" Watson and James Averell: uncased. Circa 1885 E1400-1800 A Scarce Portrait Of The Western Figure "Cattle Kate" and Her Companion, James Averell, who were lynched on July 30, 1889 near Sweetwater, Wyoming for alleged cattle rustling. Watson was also accused of prostitution. Contemporary research has demonstrated that both were innocent. The jewelry worn by Kate in this portrait, which is purportedly the only known picture of the couple (who were secretly married so as to apply separately for Homestead Land) is the same that appears in the cover illustration for George Hufsmith's book, The Wyoming Lynching Of Cattle Kate, 1889 See also Joseph Rosa's Age Of The Gunfighters (Smith Mark, 1993), and Harold Evans's The American Century (New York, 1998)
