(PHOTOGRAPHS.) Dodge and Olcott Plantations at Guadaloupe. Group of 9 photographs of workers at an island of Guadaloupe cocoa plantation. On single stiff cardboard mount, each photograph outlined in white and lettered in white at bottom. All in fine condition except one cracked at right lower mar-gin with no serious loss. (Guadaloupe), circa 1890 E600/900 Guadaloupe, a French possession when these were taken, had an interesting his-tory of "ownership." Discovered by Columbus, 1493, it changed hands several times. Slavery was abolished twice but returned until 1848. Photographs show black men and women sorting cocoa beans; inside and outside scenes of main sorting house; and the main house. It is likely some workers are ex-slaves. [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
