PICO DELLA MIRANDOLA, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO De rerum praenotione libri novem [and other texts]. Folio, contemporary blind-tooled calf over

wooden boards, rebacked; endpapers renewed; few early marginalia. (Strassburg: Johannes Knoblouch, 1506-07) FIRST EDITION of an important collection by an author whose writing "adds a new facet to our view of the Renaissance. His philosophical outlook shows us an approach to the criticism of Aristotelianism which is different from the more usual one issuing from Platonic, humanist considerations. Pico's rejection of the school philosophy foreshadows one dominant tendency of the major figures of the sixteenth and seventeenth century intellectual world" (Schmitt). The title work is an attack on astrology; of note among the other texts is De studio divinae et humanae philosophiae, useful for understanding the author's view of Aristotle. The collection also contains a few brief references to the New World. Thorndike VI, 467-69; Schmitt, Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola (1469-1533) and his Critique of Aristotle (1967), page 23; Alden 506/5.
