PIERCE, FRANKLIN. Autograph Letter Signed, to his former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Peter Grayson Washington,

PIERCE, FRANKLIN. Autograph Letter Signed, to his former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Peter Grayson Washington, denying having intended to nominate "Capt. Ramsey" for reappointment, and stating that the election of James Guthrie to the Senate would be of great importance [for effecting unification because he was a Southerner who did not support secession?]. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; first page with marginal discoloration from prior matting, minor loss at lower edge, short closed separations at folds, remnants of mounting at extreme corners. Andover, 6 November 1857

". . . I feel a very sincere interest in the welfare of Capt Ramsey and his family, which was manifested by the appointment, during my official term, of his three sons to different positions in the . . . Government. But Capt. Ramsey is entirely mistaken in supposing that I ever undertook to make myself acquainted with the facts in his case and that having taken 'a favorable view' of it I 'had determined to nominate him for reappointment'. . . .
"I feel with you the deepest interest in Mr [James] Guthrie's election to the Senate. It is vastly important on many grounds and if he has fully consented to serve, if elected, I do not believe there can be much doubt about the matter."
