[PINSKER, LEON.] "AUTOEMANCIPATION!" Mahnruf an seine Stammesgenossen. 8vo, modern cloth-backed boards; few stains and pencil

markings, a few single wormholes in the blank margins. Berlin, 1882 FIRST EDITION. Following the government-led pogroms in Southern Russia, Pinsker, a passionate assimilationist, underwent a profound change of belief: "Judaeophobia" would only disappear once a Jewish national center was established. The publication of this famous anonymously written tract, with its dispassionate analysis of the psychological and social roots of anti-Semitism, resulted in the formative ordering of the early Chibat Zion Movement. Despite the derision the work received from some quarters it was a direct precursor of the writings and activities of Theodor Herzl more than a decade later. THE ISAAC LEIB GOLDBERG COPY, with his stamp. Zionist leader and philanthropist (1860-1935), founding member of Chibat Zion in Vilna who migrated to Eretz Israel in 1919.
