- Notes: "The Epistola was an attempt by Pius II to convert Mehmet II to Christianity, promising also that if Mehmet were obedient to Rome, he would be recognized as Emperor of the East. Although it is probable that the Epistola was conceived as a theoretical exercise (Piccolomini also composed replies from Mehmet, but these are not printed here), the work does reflect a tradition of debates between Christians and Moslems and the hope that one day the Turks would convert to Christianity"--Blackmer sale 258.
