PLANCIUS, PETRO. Orbis Terrarum Typus de Integro Multis in Locis Emendatus. Double-page engraved double-hemispheric world map, 410x575 mm sheet size, trimmed close along the side margins just outside or to the neat line, others just ample; minor browning along the vertical fold running through the western hemisphere, two neatly repaired short edge tears. Amsterdam, 1594 or later

  • Notes: An important mapping of the world, noted for both its accuracy and decorative border. Plancius incorporated many new depictions of regions, particularly the Arctic, based on the recent attempts to discover a Northwest passage, and the Far East, including an accurate mapping of the Korean peninsula and Teixiera's outline of Japan. Shirley notes that the pictorial border, after De Bry, "established a pattern of cartographical decoration that lasted over a century." Shirley 187.
