(PM NEW YORK DAILY)
A group of approximately 100 news photographs by various photographers associated with this progressive and pictorial newspaper, including 2 by Margaret Bourke-White.
With a host of prints credited to Bernie Aumuller, Gene Badger, William Blanche, Irving Haberman, Martin Harris, and others that celebrated the diversity of New Yorkers. With many humorous images of daily life throughout the boroughs in addition to depictions of political strikes, Harlem church goers, jitterbuggers, war-related events, fires, criminals, and workers of all stripes, especially women. Silver and ferrotyped silver prints, the images measuring approximately 8 1/2x6 3/4 inches (21.6x17.1 cm.), and the reverse, each with a contemporary bar code label, hand stamps, and later notations, in pencil, on verso; many with partial newspaper clippings. 1940-48

  • Notes: From the Collection of Ira Richer, New York.

During the heyday of the picture press, PM New York Daily was unlike any other newspaper. The tabloid was published between 1940 through 1948, and instead of an upbeat consumerist message, the editors championed economic and racial equality to a progressive, labor-identified readership. Since there were no advertisements, more space was allotted to great photographs than any other newspaper.
