(POLITICS.) GREENER, RICHARD T. Autograph Letter Signed to a Mr. Norton of the Republican Committee. Sing tall 8vo leaf, written in a neat hand on both sides. Np, circa 1884

  • Notes: letter with exceptional content from the first african american graduate of harvard university and dean of howard university school of law. Richard T. Greener (1844-1922) spent the early part of his life in education and as a practicing attorney, but began work actively for the Republican Party in the 1884 presidential campaign, touring and speaking. In this letter, he writes from Indianapolis, having arrived the night before from Columbus where the Republican candidate James G. Blaine had spoken. Greener was touring the country speaking to colored audiences. ''Blaine did immense service and Dudley was a whole team, a quiet, effective worker.'' He says that he is ''down for speaking in Pennsylvania'', but asks ''Don''t you think I could do more good in New York State? I have been on the go continuously, traveling by day and speaking at night in every instance and most of the time out of doors, that I have had no time to write. . . . I feel more and more confident of success, but victory is not assured even by Ohio. Please send me . . . a check for $300 by the 20th at which time I''ll return to speak at the Blaine reception here. Very Truly Yours, R. T. Greener.''
