PORTER, WILLIAM SYDNEY (O. HENRY). Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, a portion of working draft of the lyrics for the song, "Little Old Main Street," in green ink, with pencil corrections and emendations. 2 pages, 4to, written on two separate sheets; evenly toned, tipped to a larger sheet along left margin; cloth chemise and 1/4 leather gilt-titled slipcase, worn. • Notes: These lyrics are for the first and second choruses, which he co-wrote with Franklin P. Adams and music by A. Baldwin Sloane. The song was from his musical play, Lo, and was based upon his story, "To Him Who Waits." The "1st Chorus" reads, "Little old Main Street for mine / Take a look at the lovers in line / Three village charmers / And 28 farmers / All meeting the 6:29; / Little old Main Street for mine, / Alone you're back with the pigs & the kine / Broadway and such / For your uncle? Not much! / for it's Little old Main Street for mine!" The "2nd Chorus" reads, "Little old Main Street for mine / And right down by the Post office sign. / Hear 'em say 'well / What along rainy spell; / But it looks like tomorrow'd be fine.' / Little old Main Street for mine, / where it's dead at a quarter past nine. / See the folks flock / Past the Opery House Block / Oh it's little old Main Street for mine." At the bottom he requests that the lyrics be typed.
