- Notes: In 1838, William C. Nell, the black activist, abolitionist, and author, advertised 12 copies of this lithograph for sale in William Lloyd Garrison's Liberator. Nell commissioned engraved portraits as a means of supporting his activities, and was responsible for several series, including The Heralds of Freedom, representing both black and white abolitionists.
