(POST OFFICE.) Third Congress of the United States at the First Session . . . An Act to Establish the Post-Office and Post-Roads.

(POST OFFICE.) Third Congress of the United States at the First Session . . . An Act to Establish the Post-Office and Post-Roads. 34, [8], 13, [1] pages. 4to, contemporary heavy paper wrappers, detached and worn; minor wear to contents. [Philadelphia, 1794]

  • Notes: An apparently unrecorded compilation of government documents intended for the use of post-masters. It has no title page, but the gatherings suggest that it is complete and stitched as issued. The inside cover is marked "Rec'd 15 August 1794" in a contemporary hand.
Contents include: Pages [1]-19, "An Act to Establish the Post-Office and Post-Roads," 8 May 1794, signed in type by George Washington (this was also issued as an 11-page folio printing, Evans 27849) * Pages [21]-34, "Regulations to be Observed by the Deputy Postmasters in the United States," 30 June 1790 * 8 pages of unpaginated sample documents dated January through April 1794 * Pages [1]-13, a table titled "Post-Roads in the United States," undated * One page titled "Memorandum," offering commentary on both the Post-Roads table and the Regulations.
