[ Poster ] ALEXANDER / THE MAN WHO KNOWS. Circa 1920. 109 .5 x 81in. Condition A-: restoration along seams; minor discoloration in image. 6 sheets. The magician staring intensely from under a white turban which is secured with an elaborate feathered, jeweled brooch; against a red background. Claude Alexander Conlin (1880- 1954), "Alexander", retired in 1930 and sold the rights to the name "Alexander" and his remaining poster stock to several other performers. As with paintings which feature eyes staring straight ahead, this image is actually an optical illusion in that the eyes seem to follow the viewer around theroom. The concept that it was printed by Av Yaga in Bombay was anothersleight of hand, intended to evoke thoughts of Far Eastern mysticism. The poster was printed in America.
