POSTER: AUGUST ALBO (1893-1963). THAMAR GEVER

AUGUST ALBO (1893-1963) THAMAR GEVERGEVA. 1926.
40x28 1/4 inches, 101 1/2x71 1/2 cm. Blondel la Rougery, Paris.
Condition B+: restored loss in upper left corner; repaired tears in margins and image; abrasions and staining in image. Framed.
Albo was an Estonian who studied art in Russia. He lived and worked in many of the world's capital cities, including Paris, Berlin and New York, where he spent the majority of his time. He was also a dancer, which helps explain why so much of his work featured portraits and images of ballerinas. Thamar Gevergeva was a talented Russian dancer who performed with Ballanchine in the mid 1920s and danced in the Ballets Russes production of Prokofiev's Le Pas d'Acier in 1927. This poster was designed prior to that engagement and was likely used as a stock advertisement for her performances. It is extremely rare, never before at auction in America. It is a compelling, almost futurist, Art Deco vision filled with movement.
