"The son of Russian Jews [Barnett] worked as a signwriter and a stonemason's and architect's assistant while attending evening classes at St. Martin's School of Art. He then studied painting at the Royal College of Art. A pioneer in the revival of colour lithography [as a medium for book illustration], he illustrated numerous literary works as well as designed publicity material for Shell, the BBC and the General Post Office." (Underground p. 140) This image is one half of a pair of posters, meaning a two sheet image, a format that by the 1940s was standardized so that one half presented the image and the other half the text.
