POSTER: DAM (DAMOUR PUBLICITÉ). PEUGEOT / ROU
DAM (DAMOUR PUBLICITÉ) PEUGEOT / ROUES AVANT INDÉPENDANTS. Circa 1935.
62 1/2x46 1/2 inches, 158 1/2x118 cm. DAM Publicite, Paris.
Condition B: restoration and overpainting in upper left corner; creases and abrasions in margins and image; repaired tear through upper right corner.
Peugeot was an innovative company when it came to marketting. They realized very early the benefits of advertising, and dedicated a large part of their budget to poster campaigns. Not only did they commission some of the most prestigious artists throughout the years (including Paul Colin, Charles Loupot and René Vincent), but they were also one of the first companies in France to turn their account over to an advertising agency. Dam was owned by the Damour Brothers, who also owned the magazine Vendre, which allowed them to give their clients full advertising service. The agency employed both established designers (like Marton) or, as in this instance, used the anonymous talents of their studio artists. Such posters were always signed "DAM." This image, in a classic Art Deco style was clearly inspired by the work of Charles Loupot.
