DESIGNER UNKNOWN HOLLAND-AMERIKA LINIE. Circa 1930.
47x31 1/4 inches. L. Van Leer, Amsterdam.
Condition B+: restored losses and overpainting in margins; repaired tears and abrasions in image.
A head-on view of the American northeast (stretching out behind the Statue of Liberty as far west as Chicago and as far south as Philadelphia), seen in exagerated perspective as if from the deck of an arriving ocean liner. The Volendam sailed the Rotterdam-New York route from her maiden voyage in 1922 until her final run back to Rotterdam in 1951, with a brief hiatus as a British troop ship during World War II.
