"This beautiful, riveting documentary records the conquest of the World's highest peak by Sir Edmund Hillary and company. On the eleventh attempt, after thirty years of defeats, the film chronicles the history of the mountain between Tibet and Nepal, known to Tibetans as the goddess mother of the world. We learn how the peak was discovered and named, and relive the previous attempts to reach its summit, beginning in 1922. We observe the complex planning before the victorious climb, and, finally accompany the mountaineers and their Sherpa guides on the actual expedition. Hillary and his companions trudge onward and upward after trekking 175 miles to the base of Everest, and we are with them every step of the way through a seeming eternity of ice and snow that finally culminates at the top of the World. This film is as tense and dramatic as the most densely plotted fiction. Both the New York Times and Time magazine named it one of the ten best films of its year; the National Board of Review listed it among the top five foreign titles, and it received a Best Documentary Academy Award nomination as well as a British Academy Award."
