In the autumn of 1937, the German airforce unleashed ruthless bombing raids against Madrid, killing thousands of civilians. The Spanish Republican Ministry of Propaganda took photographs of the children who had been killed in an attempt to bring worldwide attention to the situation and to denounce the atrocities. The gruesome post-mortem images were used and re-used on posters, some appearing singly (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #1897, lot 43) and others in groups. This poster, printed by the Ministry of Propaganda with the support of the Alliance of Intellectuals for Defense of Culture, called the Spanish people to enlist against the barbarians, asking, "Who upon seeing this does not seize a rifle to crush destructive Fascism?" (see also Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2113, lot 82). Guerra Civil p. 147.
